Import GPX into Calimoto, Kurviger, TomTom Rider and OsmAnd, step by step

You've planned an unpaved route and want to follow it in the app you already use. That's exactly what Offroad Pilot is for: planning and exporting. Below is how to import the GPX file per app, kept general enough to keep working even when a menu is renamed after an update.

In short: plan your route in Offroad Pilot → click Export to download the GPX → open the file in your navigation app (Calimoto, Kurviger, TomTom Rider, OsmAnd or Gaia GPS). Where possible, choose the track option so the app follows the exact line and doesn't recalculate your unpaved route onto tarmac.

First: export from Offroad Pilot

Every set of steps below starts with the same file. Plan your route in Offroad Pilot, check the percentage unpaved and the surface per segment, then click Export. You get a standard .gpx file that every app listed can read. Save it on your phone (for the mobile apps) or on your computer (for TomTom via MyDrive Connect). Then choose the app you want to open the file in.

Track or route? A track is the exact line you follow; the app recalculates nothing. A route lets the app recalculate the points with its own road profile, which can shift unpaved sections onto tarmac. For unpaved riding, choose the track option where you can, or turn recalculation off.

Import GPX into Calimoto

Calimoto reads GPX both on the website and in the app. Menu names may vary slightly per version; these steps stay broadly the same:

  1. Download the GPX from Offroad Pilot and make sure you're logged in to Calimoto.
  2. Open the trip planner (web), or open the GPX file on your phone and choose Calimoto to open it.
  3. On the website, use the GPX import button and select your file; you can often choose to import it as a planned or a completed ride.
  4. Confirm and save the ride. The route appears on the map, ready to follow.

Import GPX into Kurviger

Kurviger clearly distinguishes a track (the exact line) from a route (recalculated). For unpaved you want to keep the track:

  1. Download the GPX from Offroad Pilot.
  2. Open the import menu: on the website via the navigation bar → Import, in the app via the main menu (the Kurviger icon) → Import.
  3. Select your GPX file; the track appears as a line on the map.
  4. To keep following it as a track, leave it as a track. If you convert it to a route, check that the recalculated line still runs over unpaved and add extra waypoints where needed.
  5. Save and follow the route.

Import GPX into TomTom Rider

On a TomTom Rider, importing goes through MyDrive. An imported GPX file becomes a track on the TomTom that the device follows exactly and does not recalculate, exactly what you want for unpaved:

  1. Download the GPX from Offroad Pilot onto your computer.
  2. Connect your TomTom Rider and open MyDrive (via MyDrive Connect or the web version).
  3. Go to My Routes and choose Import a GPX file; browse to your file.
  4. Give the track a recognisable name and make sure there is enough free space on the device.
  5. The track now appears under My Routes on the Rider and can be selected to follow.

Import GPX into OsmAnd

OsmAnd imports the GPX as a track and can follow that track. This keeps your unpaved line:

  1. Put the GPX from Offroad Pilot on your phone.
  2. Tap the file (from your file manager, email or Drive) and choose Open in OsmAnd. The track lands in My Places.
  3. Open the track and choose the option to navigate along it in the track menu (or go via the navigation menu to Settings → Follow track).
  4. For unpaved, let OsmAnd follow the recorded line; use "attach to the roads" only deliberately, as it can pull your track to the nearest road.

Import GPX into Gaia GPS

Gaia GPS imports GPX into your account and syncs to your devices:

  1. Download the GPX from Offroad Pilot.
  2. On gaiagps.com: drag the file onto the map, or use the upload button in the sidebar.
  3. In the app (iOS/Android): tap Saved at the bottom, find the file on your device and tap it to import; on the phone you can also send the file to Gaia GPS via Share.
  4. Once the import-complete message appears, your route is in your saved folders and you can follow it on the map.

App menus change per version. These steps are kept deliberately general; if in doubt, check the current help page of the app in question.

Why our GPX carries surface data per segment

When planning, Offroad Pilot determines for each stretch of road whether it is unpaved (sand road, gravel, forest track) or paved. You see this in the app as the percentage unpaved and the surface per segment. The exported GPX file contains the complete line of that route, so on the road you follow exactly the same way you planned, including the unpaved sections you deliberately chose.

Worth knowing: the standard GPX format mainly describes the geometry (the points of the line). How many extra attributes per segment a navigation app shows varies per app. The surest way to keep your unpaved route is therefore not to let the app recalculate, but to follow the track (the exact line). That way the route you built in Offroad Pilot stays the route you ride, whatever app you use.

Frequently asked questions

What GPX format does Offroad Pilot export?

Offroad Pilot exports a standard .gpx file containing the complete line of your route. That format is read by Calimoto, Kurviger, TomTom Rider, OsmAnd and Gaia GPS. Some apps treat a GPX as a "track" (follow the exact line) and others as a "route" (recalculate it).

Will my unpaved route survive the import?

If you import the GPX as a track and the app follows the exact line, your unpaved route stays intact. If you let the app recalculate the route (route mode), it may put sections on tarmac. So where possible, choose the track option or turn off snap-to-road/recalculation.
