Trans Euro Trail (TET) Netherlands
The Trans Euro Trail is the go-to long unpaved motorcycle route across Europe, and there is a Dutch section. What exactly is the TET, where do you find the tracks, and how do you plan your own TET-style off-road route over as much unpaved as possible? A practical guide.
What is the Trans Euro Trail?
The Trans Euro Trail (TET) is a free, volunteer-curated long-distance route for adventure and enduro motorcycles that runs across all of Europe on as much unpaved road as possible. Each country has its own section, put together by local volunteers ("linesmen"), with GPX tracks you can download for free. The idea: travel adventurously over gravel, sand and forest tracks instead of the motorway.
The TET in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a TET section too, with its own route and GPX tracks. Given the density and the many protected nature areas, the Dutch TET is a creative puzzle of public unpaved roads, sand tracks and green lanes. You'll find the official, up-to-date tracks on the Trans Euro Trail website. Because access varies per road and map data is not always legally accurate: ride on sight, respect signs, barriers and closures, and stay out of protected nature and military areas.
Planning your own TET-style route
Want to ride your own unpaved route, whether as a supplement to the TET, a day ride, or a link between TET sections? Plan it easily with Offroad Pilot:
- Set a start and end point, or leave the destination out for a loop.
- The route automatically seeks out as much unpaved as possible.
- Use the Adventure slider to set how much longer than the direct line your route may be.
- See the percentage unpaved and the surface per segment.
- Download the GPX (with surface data) for Calimoto, Kurviger, TomTom Rider, OsmAnd or Gaia GPS.
That gives you a route that seeks out the unpaved roads and green lanes instead of the tarmac. Protected nature (Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten) and military areas stay out of your route by default.
